Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about lesson specifics tend to include:

  • In a clear, step-by-step process, your learner will discover the English language’s patterns and structure.

Each 1:1 lesson is focused on reading and spelling using the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning pathways.

To build a solid foundation in accurate decoding (phoneme awareness, letter knowledge, and sound-symbol associations), learners are explicitly guided through individualized motivating tasks that teach and reinforce cumulative concepts. They practice reading and spelling using specially designed reading materials and engaging manipulatives.

Repetition is essential to develop automaticity with newly gained skills. Learners work on phonemes (sounds), words, and sentences for reading and spelling until mastery is achieved.

  • Academic Language Therapy is intensive, and progress requires a commitment from families. Learners have sessions 3-4 times a week (IDA's recommendation for therapeutic instruction). Each session is 60 minutes.

Academic Language Therapy is not a quick fix, and families should be prepared for a commitment usually lasting one to three years. We move “as fast as we can, but as slow as we must” (Anna Gillingham) for lasting remediation.

    IDA Evaluating Professionals

  • I operate Milwaukee Dyslexia from my home office in the Water Tower Neighborhood of Milwaukee. Students hold regular day, afternoon, or early evening appointment hours.

Some students’ schools allow visiting private therapists, and I am happy to attempt to accommodate.

  • Some HSAs (health spending accounts) have accepted academic language therapy charges under the term remedial reading with a documented diagnosis. I can provide a monthly receipt for this purpose.

Unfortunately, most health insurance companies have not yet coded or received remedial reading diagnoses.

However, several parent and professional groups are working to correct this.

  • First, let’s schedule a complimentary information session where caregivers can get their questions answered and become acquainted with me and the learning environment.

Next, during the initial session, the student will go through a baseline screening and get familiar with a typical lesson’s format. This process is expected to take 45-60 minutes. Following this intake session, I request that you return completed student paperwork, and sessions can begin!
